From the Shop Floor to Director
Jamie never imagined she would spend her career within the walls of a manufacturing plant. Now the Director of Global Marketing at Allied Machine & Engineering, she has built a formidable trajectory from the ground up—starting not in an engineering classroom, but in the restaurant industry.
Her entry into manufacturing was entirely serendipitous. A simple job posting in the Kent State University cafeteria caught her eye. Recognizing an opportunity to get a foot in the door, she applied and was hired as an R&D lab technician.
"I had zero clue what I was getting into," she recalled.
For two years, she worked in the lab, pressing buttons and running life tests on tools to ensure peak performance. It was hands-on, granular work that fit perfectly with her college schedule. Upon completing her degree, she transitioned into a full-fledged engineering role. Over the next eight years, she thrived—talking to customers, fielding technical inquiries, and helping design custom-engineered specials.
That foundational time on the shop floor proved invaluable. Getting her hands dirty early on provided a deep well of practical knowledge she would draw on for years to come.
A natural inclination toward education and product promotion eventually led her back to school for a master’s degree. When a product management position opened up at Allied, she jumped at the chance. It was a steep learning curve. Without a traditional product management background, she found herself constantly drawn back to the customer-facing side of the business. She focused heavily on the marketing end, promoting products and ensuring clients were thoroughly educated on the tooling.
When the Director of Marketing position became available, she applied and secured the role. Today, she oversees global marketing efforts for a company she once knew nothing about.
Her story is a clear testament to the unexpected, dynamic pathways within the modern manufacturing sector. As part of a broader push to bridge the gap between education and local industry, her career highlights a simple truth: taking a chance on an entry-level floor position can open up a world of possibilities. Gaining experience at every level builds a profound understanding of the products and the business itself, transforming an eager technician into an indispensable asset.
